What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye.  It usually occurs with age but may happen sooner with some medical conditions like diabetes or use of medications such as steroids.  Sunlight over your lifetime and heredity may have a contribution as well.

The treatment is the same regardless of the cause.  The natural lens must be replaced with a new artificial lens (implant) to restore the vision.

Cataract Surgery and Anesthesia

Cataract surgery is small incision sterile surgery performed under a microscope in an outpatient surgical center.  The surgery is usually completed in 15 to 35 minutes depending on complexity and implant selected. (longer for astigmatic correction and poor dilation).  Please plan to spend 2-3 hours at the surgery center.
Our surgeries are performed at :

The surgery center setting provides services of an Anesthesiologist and Nurse Anesthetist for your care.
Options for anesthesia include;
  • Topical anesthesia with sedation
  • Local anesthesia with sedation
  • General anesthesia (for those with severe anxiety, panic attacks or claustrophobia.  Medical clearance will be required.)
Dr. Marschner will discuss these options in detail with you.

Implant choices and surgery options

Medicare and Private insurers cover single vision Spherical lens Implants for cataract surgery.  Spherical lenses do not address astigmatism (eye not round) or lack of reading vision (presbyopia).  Glasses will usually correct astigmatism and presbyopia after surgery.
You may wish to consider non covered services and implants if you would like to reduce the need for glasses.
Cataract surgery options include:
  • Surgical correction of astigmatism (LRI)
  • Astigmatic implants (Tecnis Toric, AcrySof Toric)
  • Multifocal implants (Tecnis Multifocal, ReSTOR lens)
  • Extended depth of focus lenses (Symfony, Symfony Toric)
